Rishabh Pant became the highest scoring Indian in the history of the Indian Premier League as Delhi Daredevils took on the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi.

Pant slammed his hundred off 56 balls and then finished off with an unbeaten 128 off 63 balls as DD posted 187/5 from their 20 overs. He overtook Murali Vijay’s 127 for Chennai Super Kings versus Rajasthan Royals in 2010.

Vijay had become the third Indian back then to hit a hundred in the IPL and 11th overall. His 56-ball innings was studded with eight fours and 11 sixes as CSK posted 246/5 from their 20 overs. In reply, fifties from Naman Ojha (94*) and Shane Watson (60) took RR close but they failed to get over the line and lost the match by 23 runs.00:00

But on Thursday, Pant blew Vijay’s effort away with his tremendous power hitting against the best bowling unit in the IPL. The 20-year-old hit 15 boundaries and seven maximums in his 63-ball knock.

He walked in to bat after Shakib Al Hasan had snared Prithvi Shaw and Jason Roy off successive balls.

In the company of skipper Shreyas Iyer, the Daredevils would have expected Pant to steer the hosts out of trouble but a terrible mix-up between the two meant Iyer was run out for three.

The DD camp was distraught to see their in-form captain walk back to the dugout cheaply. However, Pant took charge soon after, announcing his intentions with three boundaries off Rashid Khan in his second over. With Harshal Patel attacking at the other end too, Feroz Shah Kotla.

But Pant was once again guilty of another mix-up, this time selling Harshal Patel short. So far this season, Pant has been involved in four run-outs and he ran out his partner on three of those occasions.

However, Pant, undeterred by those mistakes, slammed his fourth fifty of the year and seventh overall in the IPL. The young wicketkeeper batsman has been in sensational form the entire season. He just didn’t look back from there and kicked on.

The southpaw slammed the experienced Sunrisers bowlers all around the park and brought up his hundred in the 19th over off the DD innings of the bowling off Siddarth Kaul. The 20-year-old then hammered 26 runs off Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s last over to remain not out on 128 and guide his team to a good score of 187/5 from their 20 overs against the top side in the IPL.
